Ok, I have Ankylosing spondylitis on top of all the previous things. I stopped counting. You could know it also under different names, such as Bechterew's disease. It is type of arthritis with long term inflammation of the joints in the spine.
Generally it can start in any part of the spin, but it typically starts in lower part of the spine and buttock. I have inflammation in the sacroiliac joint. It causes the pain in the lower back, varying regardless the motion or the rest. You cannot do anything against it. The pain comes and goes. Mild exercises can help to easy the pain and the stiffness.
In the end also eye and bowel can be affected. Prognosis could be quite cruel, but it differs from patient to patient. It can be mild or severe, or controlled by the medication, but the gradual progress is not stopping. Basically the disease changes the spine into one bone, gradually losing its mobility. May be you have heard about the Bamboo spine.
Somehow, I had the idea that this the type of disease which can never happen to me, or rather for elderly persons. This occurs more likely to males than to females. I am clearly the lucky one. Onset typically starts between 20 to 30. Sometimes the early stages are not detectable because it cannot be detected by the X-ray, it is called non-radiographic AS. The radiographic AS is the Ankylosing spondylitis. The best diagnose comes from the MRI. But very first sign could be morning stiffness, pain of the lower back during the night.
I have suffered for a sudden low back pain especially during the night. I talked to doctors and I was send promptly to MRI lasting for 1 hour. To be clear I am claustrophobic, which is very hard for me to confess. I need quite strong calming medication, sedatives. This time I got so strong that I was send directly to sleep. The best MRI ever.
To repeat again myself (LINK: Rheumatic diseases awareness, How I cope with my rheumatic disease), there is no cure, but you can reduce symptoms and pain. Doctors usually prescribe different sets of medication: nonsteroidal drugs such as ibuprofen, steroids such as prednisone to supress the imunne system, anti rheumatic drugs such as salazopyrin for lower back inflammation. There is also biological approach, which I am currently recommended. It is really expensive, and it requires regular injections. But I have to undergo a lot of tests if my body is ready for such a treatment because it has lot of side effects such as reactivating of diseases, causing infections etc. So, if I am approved by the system, and healthy enough, I will give it a try. Even I am scared, but the pain is driving me crazy.
Have a painless day :-)
