I will write another article on the topic of Lupus and whatever. This time I was thinking to focus on other sense - hearing. It sounds like adding your ears to your awareness check list when going to your doctor next time.
I have never thought about my ears or hearing that there could be anything wrong with them. I just realized that any part of my body which is or at least which seems to be healthy is a huge gift. I cannot imagine not to hear. Just listening to water fall, or birds singing in the spring, well not in Finland, is calming me. Or that I wouldn't be able to hear my kids. Well, sometimes I would like to have the button to switch off the sounds, but you know what I mean. I like to listen to the music, I wouldn't be able to communicate with other people. Terrible vision.
Ear has many parts which can be easily damaged. I found the particular name for it: Autoimunne inner ear disease (AIED). It is a disease of progressive hearing loss caused by antibodies which attack the inner ear. The very good news that the disease is very rare. The problem is that autoimmune system can attack just the ear in case of AIED, or attack the whole body including the ear (SLE).
For the disease the sudden loss starts in one ear before it quickly spreads to the second ear within few weeks or months. Before the loss, or during the process of the damage you can hear ringing, hissing due to the auditory nerve damage. Also you can experience dizziness.
As a first treatment is used imunne-suppressant to reduce the reaction of the imunne system. Medications such as prednisone and methotrexate are typically used, similar to what is used in case of lupus. In case that medication doesn't help people get cochlear implant.
What I found interesting that Sjögren's syndrome (dry mouth and eyes) is associated with hearing loss.
Have a nice day filled with nice sounds :-)!!
I wanted to draw human ear, but ended up drawing "funny" pictures for my daughters :-) |
