Some practical hints

Being a mum of two small kids in foreign country is always harder than being at home. But being a sick mum without any family and support feels most of the times hopeless. My husband works in different city over the week, so I am really dependent on myself. I am trying to get involved in different groups and I have tried to join Facebook groups but my language barrier is still far too strong. I am not able to follow conversations and tricks of other people.

If visit a doctor in hospital, they focus on your health issues, which is in really high level in Finland, but they forget on the psychological aspect. No one takes care whether you have any support. Because there is a lot of help available. You just need to get into it. You do not be alone on your problems. You just need to way. And that's what I am trying to do.

  • When I had an operation, we have received a help from the home service, called Koti palvelu. They help to take care of kids. First they can come regularly to take your kids out and you can rest, or what I needed last time they brought my kids to daycare and back home. I was after operation tired and in terrible back pain.
  • You need to create network of help, where to call in case of need. That's what I am still missing.
  • When having kids, ask in neuovola directly for a help, they can give you a crises number, where you can get help 24/7.
  • Get enough sleep. But recently doctors recommended not to sleep over the day. I have big troubles to sleep, having terrible nightmares. I need to take sleeping pills, and medication which helps me to fall asleep and still having troubles.
  • Move. I started to walk, which helps me to refresh my head. And walking is good for your heard.
  • Swimming is also useful. You can get a Special swimming card from city of Helsinki in those swimming halls:
    • Itäkeskus swimming hall
    • Pirkkola swimming hall
    • Jakomäki swimming hall
    • Yrjönkatu swimming hall
  • I got a lot of practical help from Reumatoimintaterapia in Meilahti hospital area, which is Occupational therapy for rheumatic diseases. I will write about it later.
  • Try https://www.reumaliitto.fi/en; they have plenty of activities. I would like to joint them as soon as I can go anywhere with my kids.
  • Eat well. I have heard that gluten free diet is helpful. I have tried it in the past myself and I really saw some kind of results, but I actually do not understand it. I have to get back to it. I found Avocado as a miracle food for me. I love it and it contains healthy fat. Green smoothies are also pretty refreshing. But I am still chocolate addicted. I am trying to get rid of it. When I speak about addiction, I have to promise myself to end with coffee. I am drinking at least 3 cups of coffee in the morning and another 2 cups after lunch.
  • I am drinking time to time herbal tea from the pharmacy which is supposed to clean livers. Most of the medications used for rheumatic diseases over burden your liver. So, do not forget to use your folic acid and vitamin B9.
  • Of course, use your medication. :-)

If I forgot anything, I will later update it. If anyone has a comment, let me know.

Have a nice day!!
