Do you know what is also another huge fun of lupus and similar diseases? Brain Fog. It is generally loss of consciousness. You can suffer for different time interval or different level. And I can tell you even a second of mild brain fog is pretty scary. I was walking with my kids from the playground to buy an ice cream and suddenly I am holding ice creams, kids in another hand and my bag and pram away. And I didn't have any clue what happened in between about 5 minutes. Lucking after huge panic attack, I wanted to seek for a help in the playground and that plan put me back to the ground and I could recall at least what I was doing 10 minutes ago and I found it in the shopping center. Luckily we are in Finland. Everything was there as I left it. Probably screaming of my kids rose my stress level and it happened…
To be clear. Brain fog is not medical condition. It is rather term used for certain symptoms, how you think, how you are able to focus etc. You can usually experience it during pregnancy causing memory problems. I have found socks in the fridge for example. That was just more likely funny.
Multiple Sclerosis is affecting the nervous system. The people typically suffer for memory and attention pr language problems. Also simply certain medication can cause you problems with the memory. Be aware of the side effects and tell your doctor immediately you experience such troubles. Chemotherapy is which also causes brain fog, called also chemo fog. Menopause for women can also bring along the other things problems with the memory.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is one of the typical examples causing the brain fog. There is no cure for that. We do not speak also about depression. It stands behind all kind of problems in the life and memory problems are just one drop in the huge ocean. If you do not sleep enough you nervous system do not have enough time to recover. That is clear.
And in the end our favourite topic. Lupus. Sometimes it is used lupus fog. It is more than a normal brain fog. You find difficult ordinary stuff such as to write grocery list or to help kid with simple task, due memory problems, confusion, problem to express and find the correct word.
The only thing you can stay focus and prepared. Write down, what you are planning to do, what you want to buy. Get rid off the stress, which sometimes means to do it as first. You cannot avoid stress, which most likely causes you to loose yourself in. Also I find helpful to play with my kid memory games. It can be frustrating as well, but practising is something what helps to keep your memory. I loved sudoku and time to time I come back to it. I am not that good as I was but anything is good for the brain. Similar to Alzheimer's disease. Writing is also good thing to practise your brain.
If you experience severe lupus fog you need to be open to people around you. You have to make it clear that it is not your purpose to forget about meeting or miss the date. You just do not simply remember. I have written everything into my diary but sometimes in the evening I realize I forgot it anyway. I mixed days or I lost myself in the daily routine. Anyway be honest to you and people involved.
And try not to be so hard on yourself. It is not your choice, you don't want to disappoint people or kids, but that what happens. You can practise your brain, you can take your medication, but sometimes you stand in front of stress you do not expect and things go completely wrong direction.
Have a nice day :-)
