Children and lupus

It is not common for children under the age of 15 to develop lupus. Of course except the neonatal type of lupus, where the baby, or even fetus is born to a woman with lupus. These children may have rash, skin problems, heart and liver problems caused by lupus. Rash typically vanishes within first 6 months of their lives, see Types of lupus.

But even it is uncommon it doesn't mean it doesn't occur. It is called Pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus (pSLE). When SLE occurs in children age it typically hits kids harder than adults. It carries extra health risks. Also because the organs are only developing and growing, everything is so active. So the damage risk is much more severe. About 15 per cent of all SLE patients are younger than 18. That is all about the statistics and how rare is the disease. Not that rare at all.

Children with lupus will have more likely problems with organs, especially kidneys and central nervous system, such as brain. All the damages develop typically faster. Also all it means that earlier their lupus starts, the more years they will spend living with that disease, which sounds terrible.

How to deal with the whole situation if your child is diagnosed with lupus? First I have no idea. I have to say, that I was terribly scared when I have seen my little newborn in EKG. It was like huge hit, when I realized what I was going through and I realized I do not want to have any more kids. Because I do not want to risk to put them into the risk of the pain and organ failure or whatever. I don't want to thing so far.

For sure, they will get the best care. Good where we are growing. May be as a parent you will need psychological help, also for yourself. I cannot imagine to be a parent of a sick kids. I am getting mad only from ordinary fever. But you have to start thinking how you can support your kids, who suffers for pain and fear. You have to consider changing of the diet and be very active in searching all kind of alternative help. I mean massages, swimming, diets. You have to keep yourself educated.

I will come back to this topic. It is not so simple to find relative information. It is first considered as uncommon and then you read short notes everywhere about the high risks for kids. :-(

Have a nice day!!
