Fibromyalgia and Lupus

Pain. Fatigue. These symptoms are just part of life if you suffer for Fibromyalgia and Lupus. If you happen to have both you will most probably suffer for double amount of that in addition to other symptoms from both diseases.

What is really interesting that people with Fibromyalgia  do not have higher risk of developing lupus but people with lupus do have an increased risk of developing Fibromyalgia.

It seems that Fibromyalgia has genetic predisposition and can be divided into two groups: most common primary (idiopathic) and secondary.

Primary Fibromyalgia includes brain and hormonal abnormalities, chronic sleep problems, psychological and social effects, and muscle abnormalities: for example low level of serotonin (not able to feel happy), melatonin (not able to sleep), stress hormones (lower ability to cope with stress) etc.

Secondary Fibromyalgia  appears typically with other medical problem, such as Hepatitis C, Endometriosis, Physical injury (especially of the neck) etc.

Lupus and Fibromyalgia  have common features:
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Fatigue
  • Malaise
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Memory problems
  • Flares and remissions
Generally lupus treatments do not have negative impact on the Fibromyalgia except steroids commonly used for lupus. Some doctors believe that steroids can trigger Fibromyalgia symptoms. Lifestyle recommendations are very similar to each other, so in this case, better to follow it.

Next time I will see a doctor I will probably ask about steroids and possible problems, since having problems with depression and anxiety. May be there is also some connection.

Have a nice day!!
