Lupus and thyroid

Lupus is a chronic autoimunne disease that can affect many different parts of the body. There is generally no connection between lupus and thyroid disease. However people having lupus more tend to have problems with their thyroid, especially hypothyroidism.

Downloaded from wikipedia: thyroid

So, generally it seemed there is no clear connection except the tendency or statistics. I continued searching in articles and I have found new name for me: Hashimoto's disease, which is most common form of hypothyroidism. As lupus is a autoimunne disease attacking any part of the body, Hashimoto is autoimunne disease attacking only thyroid. However, lack of the thyroid hormones can affect the body as well.

The biggest problem with any autoimunne diseases is actually overlapping of diseases. It is very difficult to find out the correct diagnose, since all of them have similar symptoms. But I would like to know how many of lupus people have also thyroid disease.

I just found difficult to recognize correct symptoms between hypo- and hyper- thyroidism, so I tried to write down a small table:

Hyperthyroidism          vs .        Hypothyroidism
Increased appetite                                                    Normal appetite

Low cholesterol levels                                        High cholesterol levels
No anemia                                                               Anemia
