I am so lucky, because so far I do not have any clear allergy. However, I am suffering for funny reaction on certain food, in certain times. Which means that I am not always reacting the same way. I was trying to study that topic and already in the beginning I have found two simple but interesting answers to the question what is the connection between Lupus and allergies.
Food allergies occur when the imunne system identifies certain food as danger and triggers a response to protect the body. The response of the body can range from mild reaction to severe, life threating reaction and can be highly fatal.
Those who suffer from diseases such as lupus tend to be sensitive to alfalfa. This contains the amino acid L-canavine which may be associated with the increased level of inflammation. Alfalfa also called lucerne is a plant in a pea family. Alfalfa sprouts are commonly used in Indian cuisine, so be aware of that. As the plant is basically safe for most of the humans and it has positive effect for example on lowering high cholesterol level, the side effects should be highly considered for everybody as it contains the toxic canavine.
Foods which have unpleasant reaction with lupus symptoms are the vegetables such as potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants and peppers. Here I was quite in shock. Everything I loved. But here again apply that reactions vary from person to person, so there is no reason to avoid that, but you have to be aware of it and follow your own reactions.
Drug allergies are quite common thing. But I have found interesting that the first time you take medication you don't need to experience any allergic reaction. However when your body starts to produce antibodies to it, the allergic symptoms may develop.
I was thinking about ibuprofen that triggers lupus flares, since I have found caution notes everywhere, but only after reading several articles, I may understand that the problem is a bit different. The problem occurs when people has kidney problem which can worsened by ibuprofen. And of course lupus and kidney disease is separate topic itself.
Environmental allergies cover either indoor or outdoor sources, such as smoke from cigarettes, cold air, pollen, dust, trees etc. Of course the best is to avoid it or use some antiallergic medication because the spring is coming. I cannot write more because I really do not have any experience with this. How lucky I am.
The different topic which I would like to put separately is Photosensitivity, because it is one of the biggest lupus problems. I will write later separate article about that and in more detail from my point of view. My first experience with the rash was when I was only about 17 years old.
Photosensitivity means strong unusual reaction to Sunlight. Actually only two-thirds of people with lupus experiences such reaction. Skin rash stands the most visible among other possible reactions. Typically lupus symptoms are triggered by reaction on the Sun. Because you cannot completely avoid the Sun, you have to protect yourself. But let's speak about it later, when it will be up to date subject. :-)
Be aware spring is coming even to Finland! :-)
- Nothing direct: Lupus is autoimmunity reaction and allergies are hypersensitivity of our immune system. Which clearly lead to the second answer ->
- Immune system: Both conditions are disorders of immune tolerance. This is a mechanism that controls the triggering of the immune response. So, if the autoimmune response attacks our own tissues, disease such as lupus may develop. When the immune response is against appropriate substance dust, or pollen, or food, allergy may develop.
